What is an e-portfolio?
The e-portfolio is a web or computer based information management system used for assessment and verification on courses with a standard assessment criteria, such as NVQ's.
How do we use the e-portfolio?
For little over two years now we have used the new computer based e-portfolios for our NVQ courses and have found them to be a fantastic way of organising and managing our NVQ's.
The process works like this:
- Our trainer makes a series of visits to the candidate undertaking the NVQ
- Evidence is taken in the form of short video clips and digital photos of the candidate at work
- Evidence is then downloaded onto the computer and cross-referenced by our assessors with the applicable criteria for that qualification
- The completed NVQ is then written onto CD or DVD and is posted, along with the NVQ certificate, to the candidate or company they are employed with.
We have found the new e-portfolio system a useful and practical means of assessing and verifying candidates training on our NVQ courses. Our NVQ's are now smarter than ever and the standardization this process brings to the assessment and verification procedures has improved the NVQ packages in a number of ways;
- Camera evidence is reliable and accurate and shows the candidate doing exactly what they would be doing in the workplace when using the knowledge gained through their qualification.
- All evidence can be easily archived for future reference to training history.
- All NVQ's go through the same evidence gathering process which maintains a high quality of training.
- All NVQ's go through the same process which maintains a high quality of assessment.
- The verification process is made more enjoyable for the verifier and the quality of evidence speaks for it self.
- Candidates can show their digital NVQ evidence to back up their CV's and paperbased training records.
Our staff have found the Paperfree (e-portfolio) system a fantastic tool to work with and we all believe that it has made an overall improvement to the service we provide to our NVQ customers.
